Title: Road Atlas of Latvia

Description: The Road Atlas of Latvia is at a general scale of 1:200000. It also includes individual maps of interesting places at 1:100000 scale and maps of 96 cities, towns and villages of Latvia at a scale of 1:20000. Additionaly the atlas includes overview maps of Latvia, the Baltic states, and Eastern Europe. The main maps, in scales 1:200000 and 100000 features all topographic (excluding contours), cultural, touristic and driving information. The maps were made from an ESRI GIS-based database in scales 1:200000, 1:100000, and 1:50000 and a general objects database. The main database (1:200000) was drawn in FreeHand and Adobe Illustrator (with and without MAPublisher), transfered to ArcView via MAPublisher and encoded. All the graphic map compilation was made in Adobe Illustrator with MAPublisher 4.0. Supplemental maps were made with various software applications. Although we acknowledge that it was very difficult to select a single overall "Best Map", this map book demonstrates a wide and knowledgeable use of MAPublisher, GIS and graphics applications and is a tremendous compilation that truely epotomizes what can be achieved when MAPublisher is put into the right hands. The book and maps were printed in Latvia.

Title: Toronto Parks and Trails

Description: This map, developed as a resource for hikers and leisure walkers, was intended to help people navigate through the many parks and trails that make Toronto special. The front side of the map provides an overview of the entire City of Toronto. The reverse side provides detailed maps of a number of popular walking routes in the City. Various city agencies including, Parks & Recreation, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), & Land Information Toronto, provided the cartographers Arcinfo, Mapinfo & shape files of the following information: Street Fabric including major & secondary roads and names, TTC routes & stops, community centres, parks & park names, hospitals, fire and ambulance stations, libraries and major points of interest. MAPublisher was used to build these GIS Layers to the base map and apply design styles. The trails were also walked by Parks & Rec staff to ensure the accuracy of the map.

Description: This submission is a comprehensive high-end folding map used primarily by real estate professionals in the San Francisco Bay area. The map includes Multiple Listing Service (MLS) zones, school district boundaries and building footprints, all of which realtors find extremely beneficial when locating properties for their clients. Various .dxf and .shp files were imported to Adobe Illustrator via MAPublisher. Once the data was imported, the MAPublisher MAP Tagger tool and MAPublisher MAP Attribute Tables and functions were used to identify address block ranges and boundary and zone information.

Title: South Taconic Range

Description: South Taconic Range is part of the "Green Series" of maps in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, designed to promote appreciation for and recreational use of open space. This map began with original photogrammetry by Pat Dunlavey, using 1996 NAPP aerial photography (1:40,000) from the USGS, on a Galileo Stereosimplex G6 analog stereoplotter interfaced with a personal computer. This basemap was taken to the field where all trails were surveyed by Ethan Plunkett. Boundary data from MassGIS and The Nature Conservancy were incorporated. Photogrammetric basemap compilation and digitizing of field work was performed in Microstation and geodata processing was performed using FME. A digital elevation model was created (by a subcontractor using the TopoGrid module of ArcInfo) from the digitized contours, drainage and flatwater. Shaded relief was rendered in GRASS. Land cover was rendered in Photoshop and combined with the shaded relief using a layer-mask process, which allows the coloring of the shaded relief to be dictated by the land cover. Texture substitution and embossing was also performed in Photoshop on the forest layer to provide a degree of realistic forest texture. The rendered background image, along with the vector data were imported and geo-referenced in Macromedia FreeHand 9 file using MAPublisher.

Description: Tasman was designed to be affordable, easily updated & offset printed. The intended use was as a general road/route guide with emphasis on the National Park and tracks therein with associated notes. DPIWE data is held within an Oracle database with spatial data managed by an SDE. 1:25000 attributed GIS data & nomenclature were extracted to ArcView shape files, with MAPublisher allowing the setting of symbology classifications & most textual placement. Final enhancement was in Adobe Illustrator with limited use of Photoshop. A few special effects were used such as beach vignettes. The cliffs were scanned from hand scribed originals which were trimmed and enhanced.

It was used to visualize future transit coverage on a 10 to 20 year horizon in relation to other city programs such as the Main Streets Initiative. Data source was internal and from other city agencies mostly in mid/mif format. MapInfo 6.0 was used to buffer and clip objects. The map was put together in FreeHand with MAPublisher. MAPublisher was used to import the mid/mifs and for labeling purposes.

Description: Great Bay is an interactive map series showing the development of the Back Bay area of Boston. It is composed of a series of maps showing the changes in the area over time which were assembled into a Flash animation. MAPublisher 4.0 was used with Adobe Illustrator 9. ArcView and Photoshop were also used. The animation was created using Flash. One of the aspects that distinguishes this project is how it delivers information. Through the maps you may search spatially by querying elements in the study area. These objects include buildings, roads, dams, railroads, bridges, and various landscape areas like gardens and districts of the city. As you move your cursor over the objects and areas of interest, pop up text windows identify them. Clicking an object prompts a search engine to retrieve the object's specific record, which also offers entry to related searches. Description: This map is the result of a consultancy contract between the city of Apeldoorn and eXQte. They co-operated jointly to produce this result. The map is the end result of a work process that goes from a set of MicroStation DGN files to a finished map image in approximately 30 minutes. Thanks to well structured source data, a number of FME mapping files and MAPublisher legends, map production is fast and standardized. The goal of the project was to come up with a workflow for the cities mapping needs, which called for rapid and standardized production. This particular map is meant as a general purpose street map of the city. Similar maps are made of the surrounding villages.

Description: This map was designed for the visitor industry association brochure to illustrate salient features and driving routes for tourists on the Island of Molokai, Hawaii. 1:24000 scale e00 & DRG data was imported via MAPublisher into Adobe Illustrator, including point data and shapes for coastline, cities, rivers, lakes, towns, airports etc. Latitude and longitude data were formatted into a .txt file to be imported into Illustrator via MAPublisher to generate a lat-long grid. DEMs were rendered from 10-meter data in Natural Scene Designer as light and shadow gray scale images. Texture and terrain interpretations were designed in Photoshop and then placed in appropriate positions on the rendered DEM using DRG data and knowledge of the area. Masks were made for light and shadow and colour was added by hand. Elements from Illustrator were laid down in Photoshop semi-transparently and the entire Photoshop document was returned to Illustrator for placement of label text and other vector elements for final submission to the publisher.

Title: Swartbooisdrif 1:250'000 3rd Edition

Description: This map is a revision of the 1:250000 series of 44 map sheets covering Namibia. Orthophotos were produced from aerial photos at scale 1:78000. Some data was captured from the existing maps, circa late 70's, using scanning & automatic vectorisation. Other data came from an existing database and was interpreted from the orthophotos and during field work. All the GIS work was done using Geomedia Pro and ArcView. The result of this GIS process was shape files, with related databases including all lineage data and quality control. The map editing process was done entirely with MAPublisher. MAPublisher was used to import the shape files to apply the symbolism, which was based on an existing map. Most of the legend is quite classic for a topographic map (roads, rivers, etc.) but for the land cover, seamless tiling patterns were used for some classes. The concept of transparent colours was introduced for the orthophotos placed in the background to give a better idea of the relief in very complex areas like mountains and shifting dunes. These maps are part of a first series of 22 map sheets covering the north of the country. At the same time, the Government of Namibia started the revision of the 1:50000 maps (1250 maps for the whole country). All these maps will be offset-printed. This project was co-funded by the Government of Namibia and the co-operation programme of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. The aim of the development project was to first obtain, in short term, an updated version of topo maps that were needed for many development purposes, and secondly to develop a local capacity to update more maps and to maintain a national map coverage where little or none existed. In order to reach this second objective, it was necessary to define an easy and affordable solution for map production. MAPublisher was clearly one of the keys for this. At one stage an independent comparative evaluation was done between this methodology and what is used in other countries and this solution was assessed to be approx. 20% of the cost of similar exercises conducted elsewhere.

Title: Orlando Florida Wall Map

Description: The Orlando Wall map was primarily created as a transportation map. Sources used in the map's creation included: paper maps, raster images, AutoCAD, MicroStation, MapInfo, and ArcView files. Different workflows were used depending on the source/format of the files. Some of the techniques that were used included digitization using snap functions to avoid over-shoots and under-shoots, thinning functions to reduce final file sizes, and labeling and symbolization based on attributes. MAPublisher was primarily used in this project as a product-finishing tool. This map is a full size wall map measuring over 6 feet by 6 feet and contains a high level of detail.

Description: Mount Adams - Map 367S is a topographic recreation map created primarily for use by various trail users and other outdoor recreationalists. The data sources used include USGS, USFWS, Yakama Nation GIS, EPA, and WA State DNR. Some data was processed by a third party GIS services company to get equivalent datums, etc. All MAPublisher import filter choices were used to get all of this varying data imported to Adobe Illustrator. The MAPublisher Projection filter was used on all layers after importing to go from UTM to Lambert CC. Then all the layers were put into the correct page co-ordinates with the MAPublisher Transform Scale function. The MAPublisher Select by Attribute function was used extensively as was Feature Text Label for most of the initial type placement.
